About Marshall Township

Marshall Township takes much pride in its rural atmosphere yet it is situated a short 20-minute drive north of Pittsburgh’s business and cultural centers via I79/279. Marshall is bordered by Cranberry Township, Butler County to the North, Franklin Park Borough to the South, Pine Township to the East and Economy Borough, Beaver County to the West, and borders Bradford Woods Borough on three sides. Approximately 14 square miles in size, it is located in the northwest corner of Allegheny County and has the zip code 15086. The population is about 7000, and Marshall is located at (40.652778, -80.113611). It is part of the North Allegheny School district, along with McCandless and the boroughs of Franklin Park and Bradford Woods. Marshall Township’s existence as a township dates back to June 3, 1863. This territory was previously an election precinct of Franklin Township. Marshall Township is named for Thomas Mercer Marshall, the well-known attorney by whom the proceedings to withdraw from Franklin Township were conducted before the court. For 40 years, in Pittsburgh, there was scarcely an important murder trial in which he did not conduct the defense. The township participates in the multi-municipality Northland Public Library.
